Redeeming Love

Movie Review & Giveaway

When you think of books that have left a lasting impression on you, what stands out?

For me, the sweeping love story Redeeming Love by Francine Rivers has long held a special place in my bookshelf. A retelling of the Biblical story of Hosea, this novel is such a beautiful picture of the unfailing love of God. We’re all broken, sinful, and unfaithful. And yet, God calls us to Himself and offers healing and redemption.

And so, when I saw that a film adaption of Redeeming Love was going to be hitting theatres, I was very excited to see how this complex and classic story would come across on the screen. I was given the opportunity to preview this film in advance, and it absolutely lived up to expectations! AND to celebrate the fact that this new movie is IN THEATRES NOW, I’ve teamed up with Graf-Martin Communications to offer a giveaway! (Canada only, keep reading for how to enter!)

Redeeming Love Film:

Based on the bestselling novel by Francine Rivers, Redeeming Love is a powerful story of relentless love and perseverance as a young couple’s relationship clashes with the harsh realities of the California Gold Rush of 1850. It is a life-changing story of the power of unconditional and all-consuming love. In theatres January 21, 2022, REDEEMING LOVE shows there is no brokenness that love can’t heal.

I was given the opportunity to watch and review this film in advance, and it is a beautiful adaption of the book. It’s particularly telling that Francine Rivers, the author, worked with the director to ensure the screenplay stayed true to her original intentions. I am sure that longtime fans of this bestselling novel will really appreciate the familiarity of the story, but also the way this beautiful setting and heartfelt romance comes to life on the screen.

The story centers around a woman named Angel, who was sold into prostitution as a child, and a farmer named Michael Hosea who hears God ask him to marry her. I loved the chemistry between the two main characters. In particular, Abigail Cowen did a remarkable job as Angel! Her emotion and portrayal of this character captivated me and really drew me into the story. This complex character was brought to life in a way that drew me to tears.

It’s also important to mention that this film is rated PG13. There are a lot of really heavy subjects within both the book and the film: human trafficking, rape, abuse. This is a historical romance piece with faith-based themes but it’s also deals with dark material. I thought that the movie did so in a way that was tactful without diminishing the powerful message of redemption. This wasn’t always an easy movie to watch but it is such a beautiful picture of love, faithfulness, and healing.

Redeeming Love is in theatres now across Canada and the US! (You can find a list of Canadian theatres here.)
