Tacos for Two by Betsy St. Amant
This past year, I decided to try a genre that I don’t read very often — contemporary romance. I love books that are fun and flirty, and have all the romantic-comedy vibes. And Tacos for Two gave me exactly that! This is an inspired-by-a-classic love story that I would happily recommend to those looking for a sweet, no-steam read. (Scroll for my full review!)

(From the Publisher) Rory Perez, a food truck owner who can’t cook, is struggling to keep the business she inherited from her aunt out of the red–and an upcoming contest during Modest’s annual food truck festival seems the best way to do it. The prize money could finally give her a solid financial footing and keep her cousin with special needs paid up at her beloved assisted living home. Then maybe Rory will have enough time to meet the man she’s been talking to via an anonymous online dating site.
Jude Strong is tired of being a puppet at his manipulative father’s law firm, and the food truck festival seems like the perfect opportunity to dive into his passion for cooking and finally call his life his own. Reader’s Thoughts:
Tacos for Two was a really cute read. I prefer my romance reads to be fun and flirty with no actual steam, and Tacos for Two was exactly what I was looking for! The story is essentially a re-telling of You’ve Got Mail but with tacos and food trucks. Need I say more?
The formatting in this book was also fun to read. I loved the text bubbles back and forth between Rory and Jude. Their online personas and back and forth banter was witty and charming, and the Tom Hanks / Meg Ryan movie references were fun.
One thing I didn’t enjoy as much were the characters’ in-person interactions. Jude definitely used Rory at the beginning and that wasn’t really addressed later on. Rory was also really quick on the attack. Unnecessarily so. There was so much that could have been fixed with just a simple conversation. Don’t get me wrong… I was still rooting for them to end up together, I just found their online relationship to be much more endearing as a reader.
While this book is published by a Christian publisher, it is quite light on faith-based discussion. I didn’t pick up on any clear Christian messaging, per say, but I do appreciate a contemporary romance that is clean and free of sex scenes! I think this would make a great option for readers late teens and up.
Overall, this book was a lot of fun to read! It was full of charm and a fun revamp of a classic story. (Plus, I always love books with epilogues. This one was about as cheesy as you could get, and in this case, I was all there for that!) I would definitely recommend it for those looking for an easy read with all the feel-good, romantic comedy vibes!
